ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

The PrepareRI High School Internship Program is a rigorous 7-week work-based learning experience where current Rhode Island public high school juniors, including public charter schools, are placed in a paid internship during the summer of 2022. We are looking for high school interns who are highly motivated to learn and want to explore the world of work. Students selected into the program will make $12.00/hour.

For the 2022 PrepareRI High School Internship Program, SkillsRI is planning for a placed based internship where interns will be placed with one of SkillsRI’s 180 employer partners. This placed-based internship model is subject to change based on the on-going public health concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic. Should the program need to become virtual, students and parents will be notified immediately of any changes to the program.

To ensure the safety of all students and employer partners, SkillsRI will follow the COVID-19 vaccination requirements of its employer partners. If an employer partner has mandated vaccination requirements, interns interested in said employer will need to be fully vaccinated. 

The PrepareRI High School Internship Program is designed for all student learners with varying career interests. Program accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion is top of mind for SkillsRI, therefore, we have set up opportunities to support students in their application journey. Furthermore, we DO NOT require a certain grade point average (GPA) or attendance record.

INTERNSHIP ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Attend Rhode Island public or public charter high school
  • Current junior in high school (2021/2022 school year)
  • Rhode Island resident
  • Minimum of 16 years of age by March 1, 2022
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Parental/Guardian consent to participate
  • Complete online PrepareRI High School Internship Application
  • Complete interview with Skills RI and/or with employers
  • Attend 40-hour work-readiness training scheduled for June 27 – July 1, 2022 from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
  • Complete a minimum of 150 hours of work AND work 6 weeks between July 11 - August 19, 2022
  • Have a flexible schedule for work during the summer of 2022


APPLICATION & PROGRAM TIMELINE (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

  • Phase 1:  Application
    • October 15, 2021: Application period opens and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Get your application in early.
    • January 14, 2022: Application due by 11:59 pm. Incomplete or late applications will NOT BE CONSIDERED
    • January 31, 2022: Decisions for Phase 2 advancement
  • Phase 2:  Orientations & Interviews
    • January 24  – February 28, 2022: Mandatory student-parent/guardian orientation sessions. Notices with dates will be sent to all eligible applicants
    • February 7 – March 22, 2022: Student interviews
    • March 23 – March 29, 2022: Decisions for Phase 3 advancement
    • April 18, 2022 – Ongoing: Staff facilitated career enhancement webinars
  • Phase 3:  Employer Matching & Final Selection 
    • April 4 – May 20, 2022: Student matching and employer interviews 
    • May 31, 2022: Final decisions
    • Student Program Onboarding: Will be done on a rolling basis once matched with an employer 
  • Phase 4:  Work Readiness Bootcamp and Internship Work Experience 
    • June 27 – July 1, 2022Mandatory work readiness boot camp for selected students
    • July 11 – August 19, 2022: Internship takes place. Students must complete at least 150 hours of work. Internship will be a total of 7 weeks in length (1 week of work readiness bootcamp plus 6 weeks of work experience)
    • August 19, 2022: Last day of all internships
    • August 19, 2022: Graduation Dinner
